Whatfix enables content creators to translate content using an Excel format. This can be done by downloading the language file in Excel format from the dashboard and then translating the content.
Download the Excel Format
Use the following steps to download the Excel format:
-
On the Whatfix Guidance dashboard, click Settings.
-
Click Translations.
- Click the Download icon next to the language file you want to download.
If you have the new translation experience enabled, click the Download icon in the Translations page under the Languages section.
-
From the pop-up, choose the .xlsx option.
-
Click Download.
The language file gets downloaded in .zip format.
The following actions can only be performed by users with Account Manager or Content Manager role. Users with Translator roles can use the above mentioned process to download the Excel format.
-
On the Whatfix Guidance dashboard, click Content.
-
Click All content.
-
Select the content you want to translate.
-
Click the Export language files icon.
If you have the new translation experience enabled, click the Download language files icon.
-
In the Translate in dropdown, select the language you want to translate your content into.
-
Click .xlsx.
-
Click Download.
The language file gets downloaded in .zip format.
Translate the content into Excel format
Use the following steps to translate the content in the downloaded Excel format:
- Extract the zip file and open the Excel file.
-
If it's the first time you're translating to the language, translate the content in the sheet Full.
-
If you're translating the new content created, translate the content in the sheet Delta.
-
Ensure you are familiar with HTML before modifying the content of the Excel sheet. The Excel sheet contains not only the text content but also the formatting and metadata about the content.
-
While translating the content of the Excel sheet, ensure you do not modify any content within the <> tags. These are HTML tags and are required to format the content. Modifying HTML tags results in your content not being displayed correctly.
- Translate the content in the target language column.
- You receive the following error when the downloaded content exceeds the character limit of the Excel file and cannot be translated.
- Error: Field could not be exported due to Excel character limit. Please update the translation on Whatfix Dashboard.
- This content can be translated using the Whatfix UI.
- Once the files are translated, convert them into a .zip file using a compressor tool and upload them.
