# Upgrade your content from existing Display Rules to the new Visibility Rules

The new Visibility Rules on Studio help you decide where, when, and to whom your content should appear. They provide more flexibility and precision compared to the old Display Rules, making it easier to deliver the right guidance at the right time.

Once your account has the new Visibility Rules enabled, add them to any newly created content. To apply them to existing content, upgrade the associated content to use the new experience.

#### **Why switch to the new experience of Visibility Rules?**

> To upgrade your existing content to the new experience of Visibility Rules, ensure that new Visibility Rules are already enabled for your account. For more information, see [new Visibility Rules for Content](/studio/docs/advanced-visibility-rules-for-content).

Upgrading to the new Visibility Rules enables you to:

- **Target elements precisely:** Display content exactly where it is needed.
- **Observe user behavior dynamically:**Continuously track user inputs and update guidance in real time.
- **Deliver personalized experiences:**Show content based on conditions such as date ranges, user actions, and more.
- **Control visibility with multiple triggers:**Manage content display based on other Whatfix content, application data, or user interactions.
- **Use a simplified and organized UI:**Access improved terminology, descriptions, and a dedicated section for each rule type (Where, When, Who).
- **Segment users effectively:** Define visibility for specific user groups with a separate Who section.
- **Achieve advanced use cases:** Achieve use cases that previously required Advanced Customization (AC), such as:
  - Displaying content only under specific conditions
  - Linking different Whatfix content to create a guided journey
  - Observing user actions in real time and adapting guidance accordingly

#### **How to upgrade your content to leverage the new experience of Visibility Rules?**

Use the following steps to upgrade your existing content to the new Visibility Rules:

****Upgrade your content to the new Visibility Rules using Whatfix Studio****

Use the following steps to upgrade your existing content to the new Visibility Rules using Whatfix Studio:

> - The following steps show the upgrade steps for a Beacon. The process is similar for other content such as Flow steps, Smart Tips, Launchers, and Blockers.
> - Upgrade is supported only at the step level. Bulk upgrade of content is not available.

9. On the **Upgrade to New Visibility Rules** dialog box, click **Yes, upgrade**.

> When you click **Yes,** **upgrade**, all existing Display Rules are converted to the new Visibility Rules.

10. Once the upgrade is complete, go to **Visibility Rules** and add any additional [new Visibility Rules](/studio/docs/visibility-rules-for-beacons-on-studio) as required.

> If the content is not saved after the upgrade, you need to repeat the upgrade using the above-mentioned steps.
12. Preview the widget using [Preview mode](/studio/docs/how-to-use-preview-mode-to-review-content) and then [push the widget to Production](/studio/docs/pushing-whatfix-content-to-production).

> This upgrade applies only to the current Beacon segment. If you need to upgrade other Beacons, you must do it individually.

****Upgrade your content to the new Visibility Rules using the Whatfix Guidance Dashboard****

Use the following steps to upgrade your existing content to the new Visibility Rules using the Whatfix Guidance Dashboard:

6. On the **Upgrade available for Display Rules** banner, click **Upgrade now**.

7. On the **Upgrade to New Visibility Rules** dialog box, click **Yes, upgrade**.

> When you click **Yes, upgrade**, all existing Display Rules are converted to the new Visibility Rules.

#### **Limitations to consider before upgrading to the new Visibility Rules****experience**

While most Display Rules can be upgraded to the new Visibility Rules, certain conditions in the old rules are not supported in the new experience.

To simplify, let’s represent some of the older Display Rules as **R1**, **R2**, **R3**, and **R4**.

- **R1** → URL, URL Hostname, URL Path, URL Parameters, URL Hash
- **R2**→ Other Element on Page, Window Variable
- **R3**→ User Attributes, Enterprise Attributes, Salesforce Objects
- **R4** → Selected Element Is, Selected Element Text

The following combinations of rules cannot be upgraded, for all types of content:
