How can I filter unidentified users while analyzing sessions?

Article summary

Whatfix enables you to filter both identified and anonymous (unidentified) users in Product Analytics using the User type filter and determine the Event identification rate.

Filtering based on user type (identified and anonymous users) enables you to get accurate data. The event identification rate (% of events attributed to unique users) shows how many events can be tied back to known users. Use case

Analyze the total number of sessions that identified users are having in the application.

Data before excluding unidentified or anonymous users:

Session metric: Total number of sessions
User type filter: Identified users

Note:

If there are no user identifiers available in the application (an application without any login functionality), and Whatfix cannot identify the user, select the Anonymous users option to view the engagement data of users.

Steps to filter unidentified users

Use the following steps to filter unidentified or anonymous users while analyzing sessions in Trend Insights:

  1. On the Whatfix Analytics dashboard, click Insights.

  2. Click Create insights.

  3. Click Trend Insights.

  1. Click the Give your insight a name text box to enter a name for your Insight.

  2. Click the Description text box and enter a description that explains what the Trend Insight is about.

  3. From the Select user type dropdown, select the Identified users option.

Note:
  • By default, the All users option is selected.
  • Select the Anonymous users option to include data for anonymous or unidentified users.
  1. Click the Data source icon and select the stage from which you want to get the data.

Note:
  • For more information on how to get analytics data from different stages, see Get Analytics Data across CLM Stages
  • You cannot change the stage after you've created the insight. Switching to a different stage will reset your insight, causing you to start over.
  1. Click Choose metric.

  2. Under Session metrics, select the desired session metric.

  1. In the User filter section, click Add user filter, and then select the desired filter to filter events based on user properties such as city, country, or browser.

  2. In the User breakdown section, click Add user breakdown, and then select the desired breakdown to group events based on user properties such as city, country, or browser.

  3. Scroll down to view the generated data chart without anonymous or unidentified users.

  • Visualize the data using different metrics and chart types.

  1. Click Save.
