In large enterprises, employees may use various browsers depending on their needs. In such cases, the extension files are generated for each browser and rolled out independently as per the organization’s IT policy. In the long run, installing extensions on multiple browser types becomes hard to implement and difficult to manage with new users coming into the system.
The Single Installer feature in Whatfix enables you to generate a single extension file (.msi) for multiple browsers and use it to deploy the extension to the end-users. This is a one time task and you do not have to worry about which browser is being used by your end-users. In some cases, when a new browser is added to the system, you can just update the same extension file and deploy the extension on the newly added browser.
Generating an extension file using Single Installer
Use the following process to generate an extension file,
-
On the Whatfix Guidance dashboard, click Settings.
-
Click Content deployment.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page and then click the + CREATE AN INSTALLER button.
This button is not available if the feature is not enabled for your account. To enable Single Installer, contact support@whatfix.com.
-
Enter an Installer Name for your reference.
-
Under the Execute Installer on section, select any one of the following two options
- User Level- Specific user of the machine.
- Machine Level- All users of the machine.
-
Specify the time interval for the machine to check for any updates in the installer configuration.
The installer configurations defined on the dashboard are stored in a file in Whatfix CDN.
-
Click Next.
-
Select the browsers for which you want to generate the extension file.
For Chrome and Edge Chromium browser, you can choose to host the extension in either Whatfix Store or Chrome Store.
- Click Create.
- Once the extension file is created, a downloadable .msi file is sent in an email to your registered account.
