Read the following commonly asked questions and answers to know how to effectively manage your software update cycle, including your responsibilities for testing, validating, and publishing new versions to keep your Whatfix experience stable and secure.
What is a Whatfix software update?
A Whatfix software update is a new version of the Whatfix platform that may include bug fixes, feature enhancements, performance improvements, or security patches. Whatfix recommends always staying on the latest software version to ensure your Whatfix experience remains secure, stable, and up-to-date.
How often does Whatfix send notifications for a new software update?
By default, Whatfix sends software update notifications on a monthly basis. You can choose to switch to a quarterly schedule if preferred. However, the most recent features will not be available.
To change your update schedule, contact support@whatfix.com.
My auto-update settings show that my update is scheduled for November 1 and occurs monthly. What does this mean?
This means your Test environments receive an update to the latest stable software version on the 1st day of every month as part of your monthly update cycle.
What does it mean to test a software update?
Testing a software update means verifying that your Whatfix content works as expected in your test environments after the version update.
If you use the browser extension method, then use preview extension to view Whatfix content—it automatically reflects the newer software version.
If you use the JS embed delivery method, then map the ready stage with your test environment details—the Ready Stage URL then displays content using the latest software version.
If your Whatfix content (for example, Self Help widget or Pop-ups) display correctly, the software update has been successfully validated.
What if I don’t have a test environment to validate the update?
If you use the browser extension method, you can use the Preview Extension or Player Extension to preview Whatfix content with the new software on your application, even without a test environment.
If you use the JS embed delivery method, then map the ready stage with your test environment details—the Ready Stage URL with additional matching rules for testing content (using CSS selectors or window variables).
What should I do if I find a bug in the new software update?
You can report the issue directly from the Whatfix Dashboard using the Report Issue option. This notifies the Whatfix support team, who investigate and resolve potential version-related concerns quickly, ensuring a smoother experience before you promote the update to production.

How are production environments updated with the new software?
Whatfix Account Managers can manually promote the update by clicking Update Now in the Production Environment section of the Software Update page.

Whatfix does not automatically update your production environments.
For JS embed and Whatfix Store users, updates are applied immediately.
For Chrome, Edge, Apple, and Firefox Store extensions, updates are published after store review—which may take between six hours to a week.
What happens if I don’t update my production environment?
Whatfix recommends you to update your production environments within 15 days of their release to test environments. If updates are not applied within this timeframe, Whatfix may temporarily pause your ability to publish new content to ensure compatibility and prevent potential issues. If you need a longer validation window, please contact support@whatfix.com to adjust your test cycle duration.
Can I roll back to a previous software version?
Yes, in specific cases, Whatfix can help you roll back to a previous version to resolve a critical issue. This action is not self-service—contact support@whatfix.com.
How can I receive an urgent bug fix without waiting for my next scheduled update?
You can manually update your test environments to the latest stable version by clicking Update Now in the Test Environment section of the Software Update page.

When a bug fix is released, Whatfix displays the software version that includes the fix in the Release Notes. As long as your test environment is on that version or higher, the bug fix is included.
What is an Org Managed Workspace?
Organizations with Whatfix enabled on multiple accounts can opt for an Org Managed Workspace, where all test and production environments are updated on a unified software release cycle. This alignment across teams offers performance benefits, such as smaller extension package sizes, optimized browser resource usage, and all teams run on a single shared software version.
