Understand end-user authentication in QuickRead

QuickRead fetches and displays content from integrated repositories in Self Help. Some of these repositories require authentication, meaning end users must log in to access the content.

End-user authentication in Whatfix verifies whether an end user has permission to view content from these repositories. Authentication ensures that QuickRead displays sensitive content only to authorized end users.

This helps prevent unauthorized access to internal information. By default, QuickRead does not include content from authenticated repositories unless end-user authentication is enabled on Whatfix or the Get responses from authenticated repositories configuration is enabled on the dashboard.

Read this article to understand the Get responses from authenticated repositories configuration.

Info:

To enable end-user authentication, see End-user authentication.

Is the Get responses from authenticated repositories configuration available to all accounts?

You can see the Get responses from authenticated repositories configuration in your dashboard only if the following conditions are met:

  • Repositories have been added to your account.

  • At least one of the added repositories requires authentication.

Note:

If these conditions are not met, the Get responses from authenticated repositories configuration does not appear in the UI. This is a backend-controlled configuration and is only shown for accounts that meet the criteria.

When should you enable the configuration?

Enable the Get responses from authenticated repositories configuration only if all of the following conditions are met:

  • Your application already authenticates end users before they access Self Help and does not require Whatfix to perform a separate authentication.

  • You want QuickRead to include content from authenticated repositories.

Note:

If your application does not handle authentication securely for accessing Whatfix content, do not enable this configuration. Without authentication, you could risk exposing sensitive content to end users through QuickRead responses.

What happens when this configuration is enabled?

When you enable the Get responses from authenticated repositories configuration, the following occurs:

  • QuickRead includes content from authenticated repositories in its responses.

  • Whatfix assumes that your application has already authenticated the user.

  • End-users do not see a login window to authenticate themselves to access Whatfix content.

Use the following steps to enable the Get responses from authenticated repositories configuration:

  1. On the Whatfix Guidance dashboard, click Style.

  2. Click Self Help.

  3. Click Smart features.

  4. In the QuickRead dropdown, enable the Get responses from authenticated repositories toggle.

    Note:

If you do not see the Get responses from authenticated repositories toggle on your dashboard, it means either no repositories have been added or none of the added repositories are behind authentication.

  5. Click Save.

    Note:

Once you enable QuickRead, use the Preview mode to test it on Self Help. You must do a Push to Production for these changes to reflect for your end users.
