Overview
User Identification enables Whatfix to identify unique users interacting with Whatfix content or your application. This helps you get user-level analytics data.
By default, Product Analytics data may contain cookie values for user engagement. If you want to get accurate data without any cookie values, Whatfix enables you to filter data based on the following user types:
- Identified users: Whatfix can detect and identify the users interacting with Whatfix content or the application by their User ID.
- Unidentified users: Whatfix is unable to detect and identify the users interacting with Whatfix content or the application. The unidentified users are denoted by cookie values and not their actual User ID.
The User type filter is available for Product Analytics and Enterprise Insights dashboards. The filter is available under User filter in Trend Insights, Funnel Insights, User Journeys, Event groups, Cohorts, and Dashboards.
Cookie values may appear in Product Analytics data due to one of the following reasons:
- If the user logs in and logs out of the application before Whatfix can identify the user
- If the user accesses a page where the window variable that enables Whatfix to capture the User ID is not available
- If the user identification is not set up correctly
If cookie values are included as part of your analytics data due to any of the reasons mentioned above, it may result in incorrect engagement data.
Use cases
The following are some sample use cases where unidentified users are filtered or removed from the analytics data:
-
Analyze the number of identified users who visited the application using Trend Insights.
Event: Page View
User filter: User type - Identified users
-
Analyze the drop-off rate of identified users using Funnel Insights.
Funnel steps: The required Flow
User filter: User type - Identified users
Suppose no user identifiers are available in applications (applications without any login functionality), and Whatfix cannot identify the user. In that case, choose the Unidentified users option to view the engagement data of users.
Steps to filter unidentified users
Use the following steps to filter unidentified users in Trend Insights:
-
On the Whatfix Analytics dashboard, click Insights.
-
Click + Create Insights.
-
Click Trend Insights.
-
Click the Edit icon to name your Insight.
-
Enter a Description that helps explain what the Trend Insight is about.
-
In the Data setup section, select the stage you want to get the data from.
- For more information on how to get analytics data from different stages, see Get Analytics Data across CLM Stages
- You cannot change the stage after you've created the insight. Switching to a different stage will reset your insight, causing you to start over.
- In the Events section, click Add event.
For more information on events, see List of Whatfix-related events.
- Add the required Filter and Breakdown.
For more information on Event Filters and Breakdown, see Filter events using Event Filters and Breakdown in Trend insights.
-
In the User filter section, click Add user filter.
-
Select User type.
-
Choose Identified users to remove cookie values or unidentified users, and then click Apply. If you want to view the engagement data for unidentified users or data with cookie values, choose the Unidentified users option.
The User type filter is available only for User filter and not User breakdown in Trend Insights.
- In the User breakdown section, click Add user breakdown, and then select the breakdown that you want.
For more information on User breakdown, see Filter Insights data using User filters and User breakdown.

- Filter your data based on Daily, Weekly, and Monthly timeframes.
- Click Save.
