Issue
You have configured Smart Tip segments and can see them in Preview Mode, but they do not appear on your application.
Probable Causes
- The Smart Tip segment is not pushed to Production.
- Smart Tips do not appear on your application if you've pushed only the content and not the associated Smart Tip widget segment.
- Two or more Smart Tip segments are present on the same page.
- Incorrectly configured conditions in Visibility Rules.
Incorrect Visibility Rules that are commonly used:
- Adding URL Equals instead of Contains: When you use equals as a condition instead of contains, the Smart Tip is displayed only when the page's URL exactly matches the provided URL. Even if the page's URL is slightly different, the Smart Tip is not displayed on the page.
- Selecting the rule as URL Path and adding the domain name, which is the value for the URL Hostname rule: When a domain name is added instead of the URL Path, the rule is not evaluated and the Smart Tip is not displayed.
For more information, see Visibility and Display Rule conditions.
- When adding more than one condition in Visibility Rules, ensure that the right operator is used.
a. Use the And operator when the Smart Tip needs to be shown only if all the conditions are evaluated as true.
b. Use the Or operator when the Smart Tip needs to be shown if any one of the conditions is evaluated as true.
- Another Smart Tip segment that is configured to appear on the same page takes precedence.
- An iFrame-based CSS Selector, for example, a CSS Selector for an embedded video player, is set in the Smart Tip segment's Visibility Rules.
- Clicking Push to production automatically updates the extension and pushes the newly created Smart Tip to the cloud server. The success email you receive denotes the completion of this process. However, in extension-based deployments, the content may take up to 30 minutes to appear for your end users. This delay occurs because the browser extension synchronizes with the Whatfix CDN at regular intervals.
- The content does not contain the required Role Tags.
- The underlying application has UI changes.
- The version number of the updated extension on the Whatfix Dashboard does not match the version on your browser's extension page.
If you're using the Whatfix Browser Extension for content delivery
- If you use an extension-based deployment, you may have to wait up to 30 minutes before the content appears for your end users. This time may vary based on the extension's hosting location, such as the Chrome Web Store, Microsoft Store, or another store.
Suggested Solutions
Ensure that the Smart Tip collection and its associated Smart Tip segment are pushed from the Ready stage to the Production stage to make them live on the application.
When you create and then save a Smart Tip in Studio, it is added to the Content section. To make the Smart Tip visible on your application, you must also configure the Visibility Rules for its associated segment in the Widgets section. Then, push the Smart Tip segment to Production. Smart Tips will not appear if you push only the content and not the associated widget.
Whatfix recommends pushing the widget first from the Ready stage of the Widgets section. This ensures the segment and its associated content are pushed to Production simultaneously. For more information on pushing a widget to Production, see Push Whatfix content and widgets to Production.
- By default, Whatfix evaluates only one Smart Tips collection per page at any given time. To show two or more Smart Tips on the same page, add them to the existing collection.
If you've created a Smart Tip on a global element and want it to appear on every page, you have to include the Smart Tip in all the respective collections. This is because only one collection is evaluated per page.
Whatfix enables you to display multiple Smart Tip segments on the same page using Multi-segment Evaluation, which is currently a Beta feature. To enable this feature for your account, contact support@whatfix.com. For more information, see Multi-segment Evaluation for widgets.
If Smart Tips are to be used for multiple pages, separate segments need to be created for each individual page. For more information, see Create Smart Tips.
Set correct conditions in Visibility Rules to show your Smart Tips. When adding multiple rules, use the right combination of AND and OR operators.
Set the correct conditions in Display Rules to show the Smart Tips at the right place. Additionally, use CSS Selectors to ensure that the Tips appear on the correct element.
To ensure that the Smart Tip appears correctly on your page or application, add Display Rules to each individual Smart tip within the collection. For more information on Display Rule conditions to display your Smart Tip, see Visibility and Display Rules Conditions.
iFrame-based CSS Selectors can only be added to the Display Rules of the Smart Tip. Add the CSS Selector in the Display Rules for each individual Smart Tip. For more information, see Create Smart Tips.
Reselect the element on which the Smart Tip should appear. For more information, see Reselect Smart Tip Elements to Manage UI Changes.
If your account's Role Tags are configured, add the relevant tags for a widget segment to control which user roles see a widget. For example, display a beacon on a new feature only to users with the "R&D" Role Tag. For more information, see Display content based on User Roles.
If you use an extension-based deployment, there may be a delay of up to 30 minutes before the Smart Tip segment becomes visible to your end users. This delay occurs because the browser extension synchronizes with the Whatfix CDN at regular intervals. To ensure updates reflect immediately, use a Whatfix Store deployment. For more information, see Whatfix Store: Our recommended choice to host Whatfix extensions.
Check the updated extension's version number on the Whatfix Dashboard and the extension page of your browser. If they are different, try updating the extension again and wait for some time for the extension versions to be in sync. For more information, see How is the browser extension updated? and Unable to see new content after updating the extension.
If you're using the Whatfix Browser Extension for content delivery
- If you use an extension-based deployment, wait up to 30 minutes for the Pop-up to appear after pushing to production. The time may vary depending on the store where the extension is hosted. To reduce this delay, Whatfix recommends that you host your extension on the Whatfix Store. Updates typically reflect within a few minutes. For more information, see Whatfix Store: Our recommended choice to host Whatfix extensions.
