Introduction
Create a Cohort to group users based on their behavior on the application. Using these Cohorts, Whatfix enables you to target Whatfix content and guide them along the right path. This process involves including a Cohort as a Visibility Rule to display or hide a Whatfix widget.
Use cases
Display a Pop-up with keyboard shortcuts to active users.
Display an Onboarding Task list to new members of the Sales team.
Display a Smart tip to all users except test users.
Use the following steps to add a Cohort as a Visibility Rule:
The following example shows how you can add a Cohort as a Visibility Rule in Pop-ups. The process is similar for other widgets. For more information, see Set Who can see your widget.

Before adding a Cohort in Visibility Rules, ensure that you create the Cohort with the relevant conditions. For more information, see Create a Cohort.
Create a Cohort of users completing or dropping off from a Funnel and target content for these Cohorts. For more information, see Create Cohorts from Funnel Insights.
Create a Cohort which contains a User list to target Whatfix content to a specific group of users. For more information, see Create a Static Cohort (User list).
In the Visibility rules section of your Pop-up, click Who does the pop up appear to?
Select Cohorts using the How would you like to identify the user? dropdown.
Select the condition using the following information:
Condition | Description |
|---|---|
Belong to | Users who are part of the Cohort |
Does not belong to | Users who are not part of the Cohort. |
For example, show a Pop-up to all users except new users. Set the condition to show the widget to end users who do not belong to the New User Cohort.
Select the required Cohort, and then click Add.
Note:
You cannot create Page Tags or Role Tags using Cohorts. For example, you cannot create a Page Tag to display content for new users grouped using a Cohort.
Configure additional Visibility Rules, and then click Save.
Click Save to save the Pop-up.
Note:
After adding the Cohort to Visibility Rules, Whatfix performs the initial sync of the Cohort within 15 minutes.
Preview the widget after 15 minutes.
Whatfix displays the Pop-up to the specific Cohort of users.
Note:
After the initial sync, Whatfix refreshes the Cohort periodically once every 24 hours.
However, if you enable the Real Time Cohorts feature (currently in Beta), then Whatfix refreshes the Cohort in real time when added to Visibility Rules after the initial sync.
