Capture Event Attributes

Event Attributes enable you to capture additional contextual information with events to help with analysis and decision-making.

For example, along with a button click event, you can capture additional attributes that give the event context. These attributes include the page URL, the page title, and the button text. You can also capture other attributes from the application.

Capturing Event Attributes is a Beta feature. To enable this feature, contact support@whatfix.com.

Use the following steps to capture event attributes:

In the Events section, click Track event.

Click Refresh page to ensure Preview Mode is enabled.
Click Track new event.
On your application, select the element you want to track.
Review the event name, and then edit it if required.
Info:
Whatfix names the event based on the element, for example, Click ‘Opportunities’. Choose a name that makes the event easy to find on the Whatfix Analytics dashboard.
From the Trigger dropdown, select the action that end users perform on the element. For more information, see What are User Action Completion Rules?
To add a tag, click Add tag. This step is optional.

- Select the tag from the dropdown and then click Done.
- If the tag does not exist, type in the name of the tag and hit the Enter key to create a new tag.
In Review selected element, click Preview icon to verify the element.

Select the Hide Preview icon to stop highlighting the selected element on the application.
To select a different element, click Reselect element.
In Choose tracking mode, select one of the following options:
1. Default tracking: Whatfix decides how to track the element. Default tracking includes past click data for the element, so you can analyze clicks that happened before you saved the event.

  - Click View element selectors to view the selector Whatfix uses for Default tracking.
  - If Whatfix cannot identify the element clearly, Whatfix displays a message. In that case, select Advanced tracking.
2. Advanced tracking: You define where and how to track the element. Advanced tracking doesn’t include historical data.
Select Advanced tracking and click Confirm in the Switch to advanced tracking? dialog box.

Tracking for the event starts on the day you save and publish the event.
Under Advanced tracking, click Element precision.
From the How would you like to identify the element? dropdown, select Using CSS selector, Using jQuery selector, or Using element text. For more information, see Identify an element's CSS selector.

Whatfix adds the Default tracking selector as the first element precision rule.
Enter the Value.

To add more conditions, click Add condition.
Click Save rule.
Under Advanced tracking, click Visibility rules.
From the Show on dropdown, select any option. For more information, see Understand New Visibility Rules for Content.
Select the operator from the dropdown.
Enter the required Domain name. For example, Whatfix.

To add more conditions, click Add condition.
Click Save rule.
Under Collect more information, click the Expand icon .
Click Select element.
On your application, select the element whose value you want to capture.
In the Collect information from this page dialog box, enter a name for the attribute.
Inbox:
Each attribute name must be unique within an event.
To encrypt the value, select Encrypt personal identifiable info (PII).
Note:
- Encrypt any value that contains Personally Identifiable Information (PII).
- For Page View-based User Actions, Whatfix does not enable you to capture related information from the same element. This is because the User Action involves no interaction with a UI element. However, you can still capture related information from the associated elements.
Click Save.

Click Save and add another to capture another attribute.
Click Save.

Note:
The attribute appears under Collect more information. To preview, edit, or delete the attribute click the icons next to it.
Add up to 10 Event Attributes per User Action.
View the saved event attribute on the Whatfix Analytics dashboard, go to Tracking and then click Events to view the event with its attributes.
