Introduction to Session analytics
Session analytics enables you to understand how frequently end users engage with your application and how long they remain active in the application. Whatfix provides Session analytics metrics such as Total number of sessions, Average session time, and Total session time to help you identify patterns in user behavior based on sessions.
Session analytics helps you understand the following:
Identify struggling users who have frequent, short sessions
Spot disengaged users with minimal activity
Understand usage patterns across different user segments
You can also filter sessions by user ID, city, country, and more, to drill down on the data.
Note:
A session is a collection of actions performed within a specified period of time, in close proximity to one another in the same browser tab.
A session starts when a user accesses the application. The session ends when the user closes the application, switches browser tabs, or remains inactive for a specified time period.
Activities performed within a session include engagement with Whatfix content, triggering User Actions, and Page Views.
Whatfix tracks a session using a unique session ID. A new session ID is generated when an end user closes or switches browser tabs, or is inactive for a certain timeframe.
Whatfix enables you to set a session activity timeout. If a user is inactive beyond the defined duration, the session ends automatically, and any new activity starts a new session. For more information on setting a session activity timeout, see How can I set a session activity timeout?
Whatfix captures session data for all accounts that performed a push to Production after May 20, 2025.
Use cases for Session analytics
Identify user frustration with Session analytics
Persona: Product Owner
Priya recently launched ProcuPro, an internal procurement management tool aimed at streamlining vendor and purchase workflows. 85% of the procurement team had logged in that week, and dashboard metrics showed strong adoption. But internal feedback from users showed that the application was slowing them down and forcing them to rely on old tools such as spreadsheets.
Priya explored Whatfix’s Session analytics to understand the problem better. She noticed that the Procurement Specialists had an average of 18 sessions per day, each lasting under two minutes. This indicated users were repeatedly jumping in and out of the application. Users were losing their form inputs when navigating to other modules, forcing them to restart tasks.
Armed with data, Priya raised a development ticket to fix the issue and added a Whatfix Smart Tip advising users to open related pages in a new tab. She also planned a longer-term UX enhancement. With Session Analytics, Priya turned vague user frustration into actionable insights that directly improved the experience.
Track application engagement using Session analytics
Persona: Digital Adoption Leader or L&D Manager
Aisha is responsible for ensuring that new employees successfully adopt key tools during their onboarding period. Using Whatfix Session Analytics, she monitors metrics, such as average session time, total time spent, and session frequency, for new users in the company’s HR and CRM platforms. She notices that some new hires are logging multiple short sessions, often under 2 minutes, which indicates they may be struggling to complete tasks. Others have minimal session counts, hinting at a lack of engagement. Based on these insights, Aisha deploys targeted in-app guidance using Whatfix DAP to provide contextual support and reinforce training, helping users stay focused and productive early on.
