System level installation: Install the Whatfix Player at machine level

Article summary

System level installation of the Whatfix Desktop Player installs the Player application inside the Program Files of the user's computer. It is a UI and Command Line based installation process, and ensures that the Player is deployed for each user in the machine in a single turn, without requiring multiple installations for each individual user.

This method is only suited when the Player needs to be installed for Virtual Desktop softwares, like Citrix and AVD. For more information, see Virtual Desktop installation: Deploy Player on Citrix/AVD.

  • Auto updates of the Player are not supported in System level installation
  • The installation should be performed with admin priviledge

Install the Player

Install the Player using the Installation Wizard (UI based) or Command Prompt.

Using Installation Wizard

Use the following steps to install the Whatfix Desktop Player on a system level by using the Installation Wizard:

  1. Download Whatfix Player's most recent MSI installer from the addons URL.

If you are using Whatfix Desktop on a 32-bit SAP application, download the 32-bit Player system-level installer from the following page:

Download Player. Download Player.
  1. Go to the downloaded file, and open it to launch the installation wizard.

  2. Click Next to continue the installation.

  3. In the Destination Folder window, click Next.

The default location of the Player's installation is already selected as Program Files.

  1. In the Player Arguments window, enter the ORG ID and click Next.

  • Under ORG ID: add the unique value attributed to your organization. To get the value for ORG (i.e., Enterprise ID), contact your Whatfix Representative
  • ORG ID is case-sensitive
  1. When the Ready to install Whatfix Player dialogue appears at the end, select Install to finish the installation.

  2. Once the installation is finished, click Finish.

Using Command Prompt

Use the following steps to install the Whatfix Desktop Player's system installer using Command Prompt:

  1. Download Whatfix Player's most recent MSI installer.

Download Player. Download Player.
  1. Open Windows Command Prompt and type cd to change the current directory to the downloaded folder.
    cmd-downloadfolder DT

  2. Run the following command to install the WhatfixPlayerInstallerSLI file.

msiexec.exe /i WhatfixPlayerInstallerSLI.msi ORG="provide the ORG ID here" HP="https://cdn.whatfix.com" DD="https://whatfix.com" PORT="49999" INSTALLPATH="C:\Users\User\Desktop\code" /q

The following table explains each parameter and whether or not it is required in the code:

Parameter Description Mandatory
ORG The ORG is a unique identifier assigned to your organization. To get the value for ORG (i.e., Enterprise ID), contact your Whatfix Representative . Mandatory value
HP The hosted path (HP) parameter is the path to your hosting environment. By default, it will point to where the installer is built, i.e, the CDN URL. Optional
DD The development domain (DD) is the URL of the server where the installer is built. Optional
PORT The port number is used for debugging. By default, it is empty. Optional
INSTALLPATH This is the location where the Player is installed in your desktop. By default, it is in your local app data folder. Optional
/q This parameter ensures that the installation of the Player is done silently on your desktop. Optional

  • To install the Player using the default parameters, run the following command:

    msiexec.exe /i WhatfixPlayerInstallerSLI.msi ORG="provide the ORG ID here" /q
    
  • You have to specify the ORG ID.

  1. Press the Enter key.

If there is no error message, the installation is successful.

Validate the installation

Use the followings steps to confirm whether the Player is installed successfully:

Using the Registry

This is a standard method of validation wherein IT Admins can use the Windows Registry to check whether the Player's distributor file has been installed, even if they do not have access to end-user registry. This method does not require getting inside the user's profile.

  1. Go to your computer's Registry Editor.

  2. Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, click SOFTWARE.

  3. Double-click on the Whatfix folder to see the Registry Entry of the Player.

Using Program Files

This process of validation can be carried out using an end-user's machine.

  1. Go to your computer's Program Files. To know how to access Program Files, see Access Program Files.

  2. Click the Whatfix folder.

  3. Click Whatfix Player.

  4. The complete details of the Player, as well as options to start, stop and uninstall it are mentioned. The system level installation is validated.
