Article summary

In-app content is the content created and delivered within an application or software for your end users as they interact with it. The content is created using Whatfix Studio, and its purpose is to reduce friction that users might experience while navigating new tools or technology. In-app content guides users with contextual help that they need, minimizing the dependence on external information. Whatfix displays specific in-app content on specific elements in your application through element selection.

What’s element selection?

It’s a process that enables you to identify and target specific HTML elements within the underlying application’s user interface (UI) to attach or trigger in-app content. These elements on which you can show content or create user actions include buttons, fields, icons, menus, or any other interactive part of an application.

How does element selection help?

Element selection helps to deliver contextually relevant content at the point of need for your end users. By selecting specific elements for your in-app content, you ensure that the correct content appears at the right moment. It further helps end users understand an application’s functionality, navigate processes, and complete tasks.

Here’s an example on how to select an element to display a Beacon:

How to capture specific elements?

The presence of similar elements can make it difficult to select the intended element, which leads to incorrect positioning of content and widgets. Visual cues help you to identify the strength of elements that you select. Elements are categorized into weak and strong elements.

Here’s is the difference between strong and weak elements:

Strong element

Weak element

Strong elements are unique identifiers; they enable you to attach content easily because they are accurately identified and selected.

Weak elements are difficult to identify, and Whatfix always displays a message to indicate that the element isn’t reliable for attaching and displaying content.

Info

  • Strong element selection immediately displays the tooltip. Ensure you always select a strong element to avoid latching issues.

  • Latching refers to the correct identification and selection of UI elements such as images, buttons, or texts on an application. The purpose of latching is to ensure that the selected element remains fixed and selected even after you move the cursor away. However, when UI elements unexpectedly change in their name or appearance, it gives rise to latching issues and the elements fail to appear where they are supposed to.

Info

Resolve the issue of weak element selection in either of the following ways:

  • Proceed ahead with the same element but ensure you add a CSS selector.

  • Choose a strong element for the content to appear on.
