What is a proxy domain?
A forward proxy is a server that sits between a client (like a web browser) and the internet. When a client makes a request to access a website or any other resource on the internet, it first goes through the forward proxy. The use of a forward proxy with a custom domain enables your IT team to control and manage Analytics calls in an environment where direct communication with https://whatfix.com may be restricted due to IT policies. For example, if your IT team has blocked the usage of Whatfix due to some security concerns, they can choose to establish a forward proxy to implement security policies.
A proxy domain is used to access a forward proxy server. It facilitates the forwarding of Analytics calls from end-user machines to the Whatfix Analytics endpoint, overcoming constraints associated with internet connectivity and access policies.
A proxy domain serves as an intermediary or middleman between client devices and the actual server or endpoint they are trying to communicate with. Here's a brief overview of what a proxy domain does:
- Intermediary Role: A proxy domain acts as an intermediate server that sits between client devices (such as end-user machines) and the target server or service (such as http://whatfix.com).
- Request Forwarding: When client devices make requests to access a particular resource or service, these requests are first directed to the proxy domain.
- Security and Privacy: Proxy domains can enhance security by providing an additional layer of protection. They can filter out malicious content, block access to unauthorized websites, and help in implementing security policies.
- Caching: Proxies can cache content by storing copies of frequently accessed resources. This can lead to improved performance by reducing the need to fetch the same content repeatedly from the original server.
- Load Balancing: Proxy domains can distribute incoming requests across multiple servers, helping to balance the load and ensure optimal performance for the end users.
- Access Control: Proxy domains enable access control mechanisms, enabling administrators to define rules for which clients can access specific resources. This is particularly useful in corporate environments with specific access policies.
