A Tag is a word, title, or group that organizes information into categories. This organization enables filtering and displaying information to end users logically. A Tag also helps identify a page on your application so that relevant Whatfix content can be displayed on the right page.

Let's say you want to provide software adoption support to the HR, sales, and finance departments. However, not all content is relevant to all departments. Tags enable effective content management. Whatfix enables the creation of three distinct Tags specifically for HR, sales, and finance. Attach these Tags to any created content, ensuring relevant content is tagged and easily accessible through widgets such as Self Help and Task List. This way, you can segment content based on department.
Note:
Before using Tags, configure them by setting up unique identifiers. These identifiers can include CSS or jQuery Selectors, or Window Variables. For the above-mentioned scenario, create Role Tags by associating them with Window Variables that are unique to each kind of department user. Types of Tags
Auto Tags
These tags are automatically captured during the content creation process. Auto Tags determine where your Whatfix content is shown. For example, the global-page tag is an auto tag that must be added to all static content for it to be displayed in the Self Help widget.
Auto Tags also filter content within a Self Help automatically ensuring only the most relevant content displays to end users. For example, if an end user is on the support page of your application, Auto Tags show content related to help and support in the Self Help.
Note:
- Auto Tags are available only for accounts where Smart Context is enabled.
- Auto tags cannot be manually added to in-app content such as Flows, Beacons, and Smart Tips, but can be added to static content such as articles, videos, or links. For more information, see Add Tags to content.
Role Tags
These tags are used to segment content based on the user role that is defined when the system is set up. For example, use Role Tags to show different content to an admin, an editor, and a translator. For more information, see Create Role or Page based Tags.
Page Tags
These tags are used for the visibility of widgets over a specific page on the application. For example, use a tag called 'asia-content' to display content specific to the Asia region pages. For more information, see Create Role or Page based Tags.
Tip:
- To ensure that your Whatfix widgets (Pop-ups, Self Help, Launcher, Task List, and more) show up on the right page and appear automatically when the user lands on the page, add relevant Page Tags in the Visibility Rules section of your widget. You can also select Auto Tags as Page Tags.
- If you want to ignore the Auto Tags and specify exactly where to show a widget, use a Page Tag to override the Auto Tag. For example, if the Auto Tag enables a Self Help to display globally in the application, a Page Tag can override this effect and show the Self Help only on the desired pages.
Other Tags
These tags are associated with a particular Whatfix account. Content creators create them based on their requirements. Use Other Tags to group content and widgets for easier management. For example, a tag called 'project-1' can be used to group all content that is part of the project.
Note:
Only Page, Role, and Other tags can be created from the Whatfix Dashboard.
